Building on the success of its original N1 series of NAS drives (we saw the N1A back in HFC 397), Melco has unveiled the three new models that makeup the MKII range. Like the N1A before them, the new N1ZS20/2, N1ZH60/2 and N1AH60/2 store and play a digital music library without the need for any other computer or IT devices. The flagship N1ZS20/2 (£7,700) has two new second-generation 1TB solid state drivers (SSD) mounted on what Melco describes as a massive non-magnetic anti-vibration platform. These are supported by a dedicated power supply with additional capacitorbanks using audiophile-grade components for the SSDs, ensuring purity right at the very start of the audio chain.

With all the fuss over vinyl of late CD has rather been left by the wayside but not by Meridian, which has introduced the latest generation of its 808 CD player – which also incorporates network audio. Part of the Reference 800 Series, the 808v6 offers several improvements over its predecessor, including decoding and rendering of MQA sources via both digital and analogue outputs. The analogue outputs also feature bass, treble and balance controls. The 808v6 offers CD playback from an internal CD-ROM-based drive which, says Meridian, allows for data recovery and error correction many times better than that employed in standard systems.

Based in Baia Mare in Romania, Meze is attempting to go its own way when it comes to headphone production and its unique approach centres on its use of wood. The Meze 99 Classics is the latest in the Classics series, using real Walunut and Maple for the earcups. Each earcup is processed on a five-axis CNC machine and then polished by hand. The design of the 99 Classics is not purely aesthetic, but also practical says Meze, with each component being held together with screws only.

Flip over the 1976 Pan edition of Walter Tevis’ 1963 novel The Man Who Fell To Earth, re-released to tie in with the film of the same name by Nicolas Roeg that featured the Thin White Duke in his first major movie, and you’ll find the following tantalising statements: music by David Bowie; album available on RCA. After scratching your head and attempting to recall the cover of the release, and before you head to Discogs to fill that hole in your record collection, the disappointing news is that it doesn’t exist – not as a legitimate release, and certainly not as was originally intended. “The Man Who Fell To Earth is a powerful love story; a cosmic mystery; a spectacular fantasy;a shocking, mind-stretching experience in sight, in space, in sex,” runs the deep-throated voiceover to the movie’s trailer. The casting of David Bowie – billed as “phenomenon of our time” and riding his first peak of US popularity – in his debut major motion picture was big news.

Mission upgrades its 2016 LX speaker range
Hi-Fi Choice  |  Apr 25, 2016  |  0 comments
Budget two-way speakers the LX-2 and LX-3 (shown) are the debut models from Mission’s latest entry-level loudspeaker range, the LX Series. Despite their affordable price tags, Mission informs us that the new models have been designed to deliver compelling musicality. For the LX Series the company has produced a tweeter with a neodymium magnet (selected for maximum magnetic force in such a small space) and a 25mm microfibre dome. This is partnered with the 130mm mid/bass driver unit (one in the case of the LX-2 and two for the LX-3), sporting cones fashioned from an advanced fibre formulation apparently selected for its superior self damping and excellent stiffness.

Theyare joined by four new models that augment the range with a further standmount speaker, two additional floorstanders as well as a centre channel model if your audio aspirations extend to multi-channel loudspeaker installations. Positioned above Mission’s entry-level LX loudspeaker range (see reviews in HFC 426 and 430), the new QX lineup comprises five stereo models – two standmounts and three floorstanders plus home cinema options. Priced from £299 to £999, all employ Mission’s DiaDrive cone system with inverted cone driven by a secondary sub cone and a new 38mm ring-dome tweeter that is designed to offer high detail and low levels of distortion. A slot port system allows for effective movement of air through the cabinet and helps to reduce unwanted noise. The range is available in a choice of black, white and walnut finishes.
